Route 66, Imagination is a Journey, not a Destination

Route 66, Imagination is a Journey, not a Destination

by Ray Stasieczko February 05, 2019

Dad, there’s a dinosaur in the parking lot of that gas station!!

Sometimes the convenience of the interstate is most welcomed especially when you know exactly where you are going and depend on getting their fast. Well, the highway has its purpose in today's faster and faster-paced world the speed to action is a necessity. However, sometimes we must slow down and smell the roses as grandma used to say. Or, as I say “we need to get off the highway and get on Route 66.”

Sometimes our journeys need to be in search of the unknown; sometimes we need to get off the highway to a pre-determined destination and explore what others drove by. Route 66 was a journey of discovery. Its travelers would see and experience things which would fuel their imagination. Route 66 was a gift of hidden possibilities. It is always in the journey of uncovering the unknown which redefines what could be from what we thought something should be.

“When you stop looking for absolutes is when you discover the excitement of the unknown.”

“The Unknown; is a gift of Hidden Possibilities.”  Today the speed and innovation impacting all business sectors are astonishing. Nothing in a businesses deliverable is immune from needing constant evaluation to how it should be modified; yes everything must be continuously modified. So why do so many still look for absolutes when if fact there are none? Why do so many speed by their imagination to a destination of pre-determined absolutes?

Absolute is a word which is counterintuitive to the word imagination. When we are absolute in our thinking, we have barricaded the road of our imagination. It’s on the innovator's journey toward improvement or reinvention where what I call; “Spontaneous Imagination” occurs. Defined as the mind giving birth to a new idea which piggybacks off previous ideas. Innovation is not a destination it’s a journey its travel time must have the flexibility to explore. When you think about it, the true disrupters are always on a journey, and those they disrupt are merely taking a trip down the same road they have always traveled.

For innovators traveling in search of the unknown, their beliefs in what’s possible expand as they uncover what’s hidden from most. Those looking for an absolute to what could be possible will pigeonhole themselves into what they’ve pre-determined to be their destination so, by default, they limit their possibilities. In most cases, they will stay with what they know and stifle any further exploration. Never allow the need to know the facts slow down the exploration of the unknown, and never let impatient wants limit exploration time or your investments in it. Triage what you discover and build the puzzle to what could be. Like the child who saw the dinosaur in the gas station parking lot, the excitement of the unknown is the journey’s reward. What we discover when we look where others refuse will spark our imagination allowing us to build what others can’t even imagine.

“Today’s technology allows anyone with a spark of curiosity to create flames of knowledge.”

Now, can’t you wait to see what’s around the corner?
